Second Sunday Specials

The Magic & Illusions of Paul Lee
The magic and illusions of Paul Lee will leave you amazed, mesmerized and definitely believing in magic!  His audiences all repeat his motto: “hard to believe!”  Paul is a twenty year magic veteran who will entertain the whole family.

In place of our usual Second Sunday Special, all are invited to the Bookmark Contest Awards Ceremony featuring guest illustrator Rene King Moreno, illustrator of Under the Lemon Moon, Siesta, and Papi’s Gift.

Kristin Lems Concert
Kristin Lems, musician and folksinger, will present a special concert of music for both children and families.  Don’t miss this Mother’s Day special performance by the founder of the National Women’s Music Festival!

Bookmark Contest Awards
Sun, Apr 13 2:00 pm 
Artists and booklovers will enjoy our special presentation to celebrate National Library Week!  The winners of our annual Bookmark Contest will receive awards, and then picture book illustrator Rene King Moreno will talk about her artwork and the process of working on a picture book. Ms. Moreno’s books include Under the Lemon Moon, Siesta, and Papi’s Gift.   A reception follows the presentation in the Youth Services Program Room.  Come see all of the bookmark entries and have some refreshments!  No registration required.

The last day to turn in bookmark entries is Friday, March 7th at 5 PM.

Craft-in-a-Sack Weeks
March 16-22; April 13-19; May 11-17

Stop at the Youth Services Department desk during a Craft-in-a-Sack Week after you check out a book.  Show us your circulation receipt, and we’ll give you a Craft-in-a-Sack to make a fun project at home!  One craft per child, while supplies last.

Grandparent/Grandchild Storytime
Sun, May 18 from 2:00 – 3:00 pm
For grandparents and their grandkids, ages 2-6

Grandchildren, bring your grandparent to a special program for the two of you! Together you will listen to stories, work on a craft to take home, eat some treats, and have your picture taken together to keep.  Space is limited, so register for this program online beginning May 1 or by calling 847-663-6623.

Go Club
First and third Saturdays every month from 2:00 – 3:00 pm
Come learn this ancient game of strategy using white and black stones on a large ruled board, with the goal of staking out and protecting yourself.  No registration needed.

Reading Patch Club
Just a reminder:  It’s time to finish up your reading for the Reading Patch Club!  Students have until Memorial Day weekend to complete the reading and activities to earn a colorful cloth patch, and get a certificate to show to their teachers.  They also will get their names on the big Reading Patch display at the library, and in the Kids’ Corner newsletter!  If you haven’t signed up yet, it’s not too late to start, but all packets must be turned in by Saturday, May 24.

Celebrate Poetry in April!
April is National Poetry Month.  Throughout the Department you will find some of our favorite poems—take a moment to read one, or pick up a Scavenger Hunt form at the desk and find 20 poems to win a prize.  Beginning April 15, you can move on to the more challenging hunt for the super-finders.  We will also celebrate poetry by decorating our entryway tree with your poems so it can become our Po-e-tree for the month!  Forms available at the desk beginning April 1.

Story Adventure Club

In this storytime for older children (grades 1-3), we will read some great longer stories and do related activities like acting the story out, making artwork, or doing a puzzle.  We will begin with an after school snack.  Sign up separately for each session online or by calling 847-663-6623.

Family storytime for children aged 3 to 8 and their caregivers of stories and songs in English and Spanish. At the final session, we will celebrate Day of the Book/Day of the Child (el Día de los Niños/Día de los Libros) with a party including singing, dancing, crafts and refreshments. If you speak Spanish or just want to learn a little, come join in the fun!

Invitamos a los niños de 3 a 8 años y sus padres a disfrutar cuentos y canciones en español y en inglés. A la última sesión, celebramos el Día de los Niños/Día de los Libros con una fiesta de baile, proyectos de arte, y comida.

Chess Shop with Mr. Chris
Fri, Mar 7 & 14, from 3:45 - 4:45 pm, K-8th grade

Learn the game of chess with Mr. Chris in a hands-on tutorial, demonstration and discussion.  For all levels of players.  No registration necessary. 

Reading with Rover
Wednesdays Mar 12, Mar 26  Grades K - 8

Look for the chance to cuddle up to a Real Dog and have a good time reading aloud.  No, you read to the dog, the dog can’t read! But he sure is a good listener.  No parents allowed—no pesky brothers or sisters either—just you!  This program will be run by the experienced folks at Rainbow Assisted Animal Therapy.  Sign up in person or over the phone at 847-663-6623 beginning March 1st.


Summer Reading Club Volunteer Orientation
Choose one: Thurs, May 29 7:00 pm; Sat, May 31 10:00 am; Mon, June 2, 7:00 PM
We cannot run our Summer Reading Game without the help of our wonderful volunteers.  Students will be in seventh grade in Fall 2008 or older may work as a Summer Reading volunteer and earn service hours as well as good experience.  All volunteers must attend one orientation session.   Sign up in person, online, or by calling the Youth Services dept. at 847-663-6623.
