Programs SUMMER READING CLUB Niles Public Library Youth Services Presents Get in the Game: READ! Play games, win prizes and get smarter! Bring your library card. Remember, little brothers and sisters, even if they aren’t reading yet, can play too! And parents have a special game just for them. Come in any time the library is open, except for the last half hour of each day. SIGN UP FOR THESE PROGRAMS! You can sign up online, at 847-663-6623, or at the Youth Services Desk. Sign up for programs beginning the 1 st of the month unless otherwise indicated. JUNE Book Buddies: Big and Little Sharing Books Parents: Would your child like extra time listening to stories? Would your beginning or struggling reader like extra practice reading? We will try to match your child with a teen or adult volunteer to share the joy of books. Buddies meet at the Library once a week during the summer for an hour. For more information or to sign up, call Clara at 847-663-6628. Teens (going into 8 th grade and above) and Adults: Share the joy of reading with a child. If you have free time this summer and are in 8th grade or older, you can be a Book Buddy. Buddies read to and listen to children read once a week for an hour. The library provides all materials and training. For more information, call Clara at 847-663-6628. Exciting Writing Come play with words and ideas and write about topics you enjoy. Activities will include: DDR Competition Guitar Hero Competition Compete to see who will be the Guitar Hero Champion (or just come and watch). You must register for the DDR and Guitar Hero competitions separately. Chat & Chomp Read a book and while you talk about it, eat a snack and see if you can guess how it relates to the book. Sign up for each discussion at the first of the month. You will need to come to the library and pick up a book at the main circulation desk. JULY Scrapbook Journaling Description: Bring your photos and memories to combine into a great keepsake! Using acid and lignin-free materials, we will artfully arrange cropped photos and then create journal entries to accompany your pictures. Chat & Chomp Read a book and while you talk about it, eat a snack and see if you can guess how it relates to the book. You will need to come to the library and pick up a book at our circ desk. Readers’ Theater Want to be part of a play, but without the fuss? Join this all-in-one rehearsal and production! 3rd grade and up, registration required. Parents, friends, brothers, sisters and cousins can join us at 11: 30 to watch the show! Super Mario Kart for the Wii Tournament Come and test your Wii skills in an all-new Super Mario Kart tournament! Space is limited! Munchies will be provided. AUGUST Create Your Own Computer Game Create your own computer game using Scratch, a graphical programming language. This program is in two sessions, and children must be available to attend both Tuesday and Wednesday sessions. Library Legos Build some amazing Lego creations with Beth Weis! Sorry, we cannot admit children under age 5 because of the choking risk, but younger kids can sign up for Library Duplos (below). Parents or caregivers must stay in room for children grades 2 and under. Library Duplos Build some wonderful Lego creations with the larger size Lego blocks. Children must be accompanied by parents or caregivers. Get Ready for Kindergarten Certified teacher Sandy Sweilem will work with children entering Kindergarten using numbers, letters, and fun activities to help them get ready to start school. Indian Independence Day & Raksha Bandhan Celebration Family storytime for children aged 3 to 8 and their caregivers. We will read some great stories in English and Hindi and the celebration includes singing, crafts, and snacks. JUST DROP IN FOR THESE PROGRAMS Babytime! Short stories, familiar songs, activities, and a playtime for babies 2 and under. Babies must be accompanied by a caregiver. Rise & Shine Storytime Drop in to hear some stories, sing some songs, and do some wiggling. Ages 2-6 (younger children must attend with an adult caregiver). No registration required. Go Club Learn the ancient game of Go, a game with simple rules but complex strategy, led by Bob Barber. The Go Club usually meets on the first and third Saturday of the month year-round. DDR & Guitar Hero Practice Practice your DDR skills for fun or to prepare for the tournament on Thursday, June 19 th. Saturday Family Movies Watch a family-friendly movie and enjoy a movie treat. JUNE Mother Goose and Friends Full of rhyme, puppetry, and fun props and creative dramatics, Mother Goose's program offers young children the opportunity to interact with storyteller Mary Jane Haley. Cheeseprov! HeadCheese Fat Boss productions wants you to get into the game with "Cheeseprov," an interactive theater event and workshop for all ages. Come see Ken Schultz, "the Flying Fool" return to Niles with his juggling, physical comedy, humor and improvisation. Enjoy the audience participation and Ken's skills as he juggles bowling balls, eats fire and performs other antics sure to bring a laugh. Green Golly and Her Golden Flute A mesmerizing Rapunzel story told with accompanying music by Flute Sweet and Tickletoons. JULY The Great American Challenge Ever want to participate in a TV game show? Test your skill and smarts about games in this fun-filled “Great American Challenge!” presented by American Eagle Productions. Playbill! Saturday, July 19 at 2 pm Returning for a seventh season, local teens create a play from script to production that will delight all ages. Don’t miss this performance of a family show! Dr. Robert James Presents Animal Encounters Animal authority Dr. Robert James teaches children about animals and gives them a safe opportunity to meet them and even touch them! Tickets for this very popular program will go fast. Dave Rudolf “Get in the Game” Concert Join the fun with Dave Rudolf and learn to participate, not spectate! There will be hula hooping, limboing and more audience participation. Come sing, dance and Get in the Game! AUGUST For Summer Reading Club Finishers Where the Sidewalk Ends Tuesday, August 19 4:00 pm OR 7:00 pm Join us for this amazing musical production of Shel Silverstein's beloved "Where the Sidewalk Ends" by American Eagle Productions. Tickets will be handed out to Summer Reading Club finishers and their families.
