Homework Help Now Available

The Niles Public Library now offers Tutor.com Live Homework Help from its website homepage. Tutor.com provides online homework help for students in grades 4 - 12 and introductory college courses. A user first clicks on "Live Homework Help" on the Library's homepage. The student then selects the grade level and subject he needs help in. Help is available in such subjects as English, mathematics, science, and social studies. Both English and Spanish language tutors are available. Help is available everyday from 2:00 pm to 10:00 pm. A student can access Tutor.com from both the Library's Internet computers or from their own computer at home.

Register for E-Mail Notices

Many of you have already registered to receive your hold notices through e-mail. Soon you will be receiving a pre-overdue notice if we have your correct e-mail address. This notice will come to you 3 days prior to the due date, reminding you that your materials will be due in two days.

You can register your e-mail address with us by going to our website and clicking on the iBistro icon. Click on My Account, then Submit My E-mail Address, then follow the instructions. Remember that you can renew your materials, place and cancel holds, and check your account before coming in to the Library.

Taxes, Taxes, Taxes

Federal and state income tax forms are located on the upper level in the reference department. Ask the reference librarian about forms that are not in the tax forms racks.

Eleven Veterans History Project Transcripts...

are atop the Portrait File cabinet opposite the Reference 900s. They are available to read and patrons can arrange with the AYA staff to listen to any cassettes of the interviews.  “A Veterans History Project Reading List,” based on the U.S. Army Chief of Staff’s recommendations for “cadets through senior leaders,” is also on the VHP countertop.

Veterans History Project is Underway

Niles Public Library is interviewing veterans about their service for the Library of Congress. This project honors contributions of men and women who served in all branches of the armed services as well as other areas such as civil defense, the USO, medical volunteers, and flight instructors. First Friday Happy Hour Book Talk

Join us this Friday after work at Caldwell’s Kitchen on the corner of Touhy & Caldwell for our 16th First Friday Happy Hour Book Talk. This month we start sharing Graphic Novels. Everyone is welcome. It’s a great way to end the week!

American Idol Countdown Contest

AMERICAN IDOL IS BACK - and so is the American Idol Countdown contest. It starts with the final 6, there will be a winner every week, and it ends with the finale shown here on the big screen with door prizes and refreshments!

DVD The DVD display for April is again “Comedies” on the top of the display unit and “Musicals” on the lower half of the center unit. “Foreign Dramas” are still displayed along the back wall (next to the foreign DVD collection) and “Mysteries, Thrillers, Suspense and Crime” titles are still up on the Friends Room slatwall.
CD Gospel Music is up in AV. Sacred Vocal Music display is up across from the classical music at the end of the BOTs. Of course, the American Idol elimination poster is also up. The finale will definitely be on May 21. Our contest will begin when there are 6 contestants left.

Tutor.Com

Puzzling over a difficult math problem, or need help with an essay?  Niles Public Library is now offering Tutor.com, an on-line live homework help service, where you can chat with a live tutor about math, social studies, English, and science.  You can chat from home if you have a Niles Public Library card (just click on the Tutor.Com link on the Library’s homepage), or you can come in and use the library’s computers if you have an out-of-district card.  The service is offered from 2:00-10:00 pm every day.  For Spanish speaking users, the service is offered from 2:00-10:00 pm Sunday through Thursday.

LeapPad Interactive Books and Cartridges

Youth Services now has LeapPad Interactive Books and Cartridges to borrow for your LeapPad Learning System at home. They are kept in yellow bags with the kits in the audiovisual area of the Youth Department. We have titles for younger children through grade 3. The book/cartridge kits are designed to assist children to learn to read or improve their reading with interactive activities, music, games, stories and facts that make learning fun.
