The Library offers free wireless Internet access is available during normal operating hours.
PLEASE NOTE: Bring a fully charged battery. Electrical outlets are not readily available.
Is there an access fee? No. The library offiers this service free of charge. Users must have their own equipment, wireless card, and software. What equipment do I need? Any wireless ethernet device that is certified 802.11b should be compatible with the wireless network at the library. Library District staff will not supply, install, or configure any equipment and/or software on your computer. Configuring your device for use on our network is the responsibility of the user. How do I connect to the library wireless network? To connect to the wireless network, patrons need a 802.11b compatible network card. The Library has two separate wireless zones. Patrons should configure their equipment to use the appropriate SSID (service set identifier) and to obtain a TCP/IP address automatically. No encryption is used in the wireless network. SSID: NilesLibrary Windows XP, Windows 2000 and Macintosh OSX will allow you to make these changes with no additional software. If you are using any other operating system, such as Windows 9x, Me, 2000, or NT, you will need to use the configuration program that came with your wireless card. If you are unsure how to use the configuration program that came with your wireless access card, please check with your computer vendor or reseller. When you have successfully connected to our wireless network, you should see a Wireless Usage Policy Acceptance Page when your browser is launched. Access to the internet is not granted until this usage policy is accepted. Is technical support available from the library staff? No. Due to insurance limitations and warranties, technical support is not available from the library staff. You must be familiar with your device and know how to set it up for wireless access. The patron accepts full responsibility for selecting, installing and configuring the hardware and software necessary for using the wireless network. The Library assumes no responsibility for any problems or damage that may be inflicted on any equipment by using or attempting to connect to the wireless network. Is the network secure? No. The library's wireless network is not secure. Information sent to or from your wireless device can be captured by anyone else with a wireless device and the appropriate software within three hundred feet. Virus, security, and privacy protection is the responsibility of the user. Is the network filtered? No. The wireless network is not filtered. Content filtering on personal equipment is the responsibility of the user. Can I print? Yes. The Library offers a remote printing service that allows patrons to print from their wireless connected laptop or even remotely from their home PC. For more information please see |
