You are your child's first teacher
The children's librarians have put together a calendar of things you can do with your child that are fun and give them the tools they need for building language. The things you do together shape what a child knows and feels about communication, language, reading, and writing before he or she learns to read and write. Studies show that early reading experiences with their parents prepare children for learning to speak and read. You don't need flashcards, tutors, or drills to teach early literacy. Children learn best when they are exploring, having fun, and using their imagination with people they love and trust.
