SUMMER READING CLUB CENTRAL
What is the Summer Reading Club?
A fun-filled way to encourage kids to read over the summer. We give each participant a special log to keep track of their reading when they register. We have a huge game that kids play over the summer and prizes too!
Who can join?
Anybody, from babies through 8th grade, can join our Summer Reading Club. You don’t have to know how to read to join! You just need to have a library card from any library.
How do I sign up?
You can sign up any time beginning Monday, June 8 at 9:30 am. Bring your library card to the Youth Services Dept. and we will get you started.
When does the Summer Reading Club start and end?
Monday, June 8 is the first day and Monday, August 3 is the last day. The Summer Reading Club hours are 9:30 am-8:30 pm on Mondays—Thursdays and 9:30am-4:30pm on Fridays and Saturdays. (Remember, the Library is closed on Sundays during the summer).
Why is it a good idea to read over the summer?
Reading is fun, and it keeps you smart! It can open doors to new—and sometimes wild—worlds!!!
What about kids who can’t read yet?
We have a Read-to-Me Club for kids who aren’t reading yet AND a Ready-to-Read Club for kids who are just learning to read.
How does the Summer Reading Club work?
When you register, you’ll get a Summer Reading log to fill in the amount of time you’re reading. You need to bring your log to the Library each time you want to play the Summer Reading Game.
Your goal is to read 10 hours for the summer, and you keep track in 15-minute slots, so you need to keep an eye on the clock when you’re reading.
When you’ve read at least an hour (or more), you can come in and play the Summer Reading game. You can come in as often as you like if you’ve read at least an hour since the last time you came, but no more than once a day. You get a Glummy nickel for each hour you read for the first 10 hours.
You need to share one book with us during the summer—either draw a picture, write a review or tell us about a book you read. BOOK SHARING. You get a Glummy nickel when you share a book with us.
Glummy nickels can be kept, traded in for prizes, or you can donate them to Adopt-an-Animal at the Lincoln Park Zoo. PRIZES
When you finish 10 hours, you get:
A collectible Glummy Summer Reading patch!
A book to keep!
Some coupons!
Your name on our special Rainbow of Readers wall!
A certificate!
And a round of applause!
How does the Ready to Read Club work?
This Club is for kids who are working on learning to read.
It works the same as the Summer Reading Club, except that your goal is to read for about 5 hours and to listen to books for about 5 hours.
A parent or older brother or sister can read to you (and count that reading for their Summer Reading hours as well)! Or you can listen to books on tape. We’ll give you special stickers to keep track of whether you’re reading on your own or someone is reading to you.
How does the Read-to-Me Club work?
For kids who can’t read yet, the goal is to listen to 50 books over the summer.
When parents register, they’ll get a log to keep track of the books they’re sharing with their little one. You’ll need to bring this log to the Library each time you want your child to play the Read-to-Me Game.
When they’ve read at least 5 books (or more), they can come and play their own special game and get a prize. They can come in as often as they like, but no more than once a day.
When they finish 50 books, they get:
A book to keep!
Some coupons!
Their name on our Read-to-Me Club gameboard!
