KidSpace Pet Pen Pals
Grades K-8
Register for our Pet Pen Pals Program and write to the pets of your favorite librarians! Send us an email with “Pet Pen Pal” in the subject line. Include your child’s name, age, and something they like to do. You can receive letters back from Fizzgig, Bambino, and Duct Tape (just to name a few). Registrants can pick up supplies from the Library and choose pets they would like to write to.

Pictures to Ms. Bunny
Preschool and Under
Ms. Bunny, our trusted storytime sidekick, needs some new art for her cozy bunny home, called a burrow. Draw her a picture of something nice and she’ll hang it up on her refrigerator! Send us an email with “Pictures to Ms. Bunny” in the subject line. Include your child’s name, age, and something they like to do. Registrants can pick up supplies from the Library.

Reading Programs

1KBK: 1,000 Books Before Kindergarten

1,000 books sounds like a lot of books, but if all you do is read your child one book every night at bedtime, you will have read 1,000 books before your child turns 3! Find more information here.

Battle of the Books

Battle of the Books is a wonderful school-Library partnership where local schools put together teams of enthusiastic readers and Niles-Maine librarians pick the books. Teams meet to battle over book quiz questions and a winner is declared after weeks of meeting. Get more information here.

Reading Challenge

Reading Challenge is a reading competition for 6th-8th graders.  At least one team member must attend school in the Niles-Maine District Library. Learn more here.

Reading Patch Club

Do you like to choose lots of different books to read? Whatever you like to read, we have a patch for you! Kids in Kindergarten-Grade 8 are eligible to join the Reading Patch Club that runs during the school year, from Labor Day (September) to Memorial Day (May). Join here.

Wonder Ground

Kids in Kindergarten through 4th grade are invited to play, explore and learn with exciting STEAM activities. STEAM stands for Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Math, and is crucial to a well-rounded 21st-century education. Get information here.
