In addition to the Flight Path grant from STARnet, which has allowed the library to host Nature Meets Technology programs with the Chicago Bird Alliance and the Forest Preserves of Cook County, we continue to work with community parters to help our community understand the importance of the migratory birds that move through our area.
In this spirit, the library has partnered with the Chicago Bird Migration Monitoring Network, an organization that has installed a device on the roof of the library which tracks the movements of migratory birds through Chicagoland. The device uses acoustics, thermal imagery, radar, and other technologies to advance scientific understanding while bringing knowledge and awareness of migratory birds to new audiences. An additional component was recently added which tracks bats as well.
As can be seen on the Chicago Bird Migration Monitoring Network’s website, last week our site detected the highest number of migrating birds in the area, with 17,590 detections in one night!
With these partnerships, we are teaching people how to prevent bird strikes and how to maintain habitats for local and migrating birds.
If you would like to get involved more, check out the Chicago Bird Migration Network website, attend a Nature Meets Technology program, or check out a bird-watching kit from the Library of Things.
These titles are about the fascinating migration of birds.
