Plant-Based Programs: Growing at the Library

You don’t need a green thumb to enjoy our gardening programs this fall! In the coming weeks, the Niles-Maine District Library will be offering multiple opportunities for both aspiring and experienced gardeners to learn, connect, and grow. Here’s a look at what’s coming up.

Seed Library Harvest Photo Showcase

If you enjoyed our Seed Library this spring, we’d love to celebrate your harvest with you. Send us photos via email or social media of the plants you’ve grown using our seeds by September 30, and you’ll be entered into the Seed Library Harvest Photo Showcase. At the end of the showcase, two lucky gardeners will be chosen at random to receive a $50 gift card for the Lurvey Garden Center. We can’t wait to see what our patrons have grown!

Seed Saving 101

Sustainability and garden consultant Katie Shamis is returning to the Library later this month to show us how to grow next year’s garden from this year’s plants in Seed Saving 101. This hands-on demonstration will cover the basics of saving seeds, including which plants are easiest to start with and practical ways to store seeds you want to plant later.

Houseplants 101: Right Plant, Right Place

Katie will be back in early October to share tips on choosing and caring for indoor plants in Houseplants 101: Right Plant, Right Place. In this program, Katie will be discussing how to pick plants that will thrive in your living space as well as topics such as watering, repotting, and pest control. Bring your houseplant questions to this friendly, beginner-focused workshop.

Plant Swap

Our highly anticipated Plant Swap event will be returning in October as well, and we’re already excited to see what plants will be donated this year. During the drop-off events, gardeners will have the opportunity to donate both indoor and outdoor plants, as well as any tools, supplies, and books that they would like to share with the community. As in previous years, this is a no-charge event that is open to all community members. Participants do not need to donate to attend, and all items will be free to take home.

We’re thrilled to be hosting these events for our community because we also share our patrons’ passion for gardening. We can’t wait to explore the world of plants with you before the winter weather creeps in.

See you at the Library!
