Join us on Wednesday, June 18 at 6 p.m. for a special one-hour Juneteenth program with Oba William King. In this program, Mr. King and the JUSTUSarts Educational Entertainment Ensemble will present a program that features West African-style drumming, interactive storytelling, spoken word, call and response, dance, and history. Participants will also have the opportunity to create a freedom flag.
Juneteenth, also known as Emancipation Day, celebrates the end of slavery in America. “Specifically, Juneteenth marks the day in 1865 when enslaved people in Texas learned that they had been freed under President Abraham Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation, which had been issued in 1863,” (Biscontini).
Juneteenth: Celebrate Freedom is open to all ages and will be held in the Commons Meeting Room A&B.
