Library Board Approves Tax Abatement

In order to help ease the financial burden caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, the Niles-Maine District Library Board of Trustees, at a special board meeting on May 11, 2020, voted to approve an abatement of the 2019-2020 Library tax levy in the amount of $1 million, or 14.3% of the levy. This decision will reduce the library portion of each district resident’s second property tax installment by roughly $35 on a $5,000 tax bill.

Though the abatement will lower the amount of operating funds the Library will have next year, it will not affect the ongoing operations of the Library. Through careful planning by the current and previous Library Board’s, there are sufficient funds to cover the decrease in the levy.

Even though the physical building is currently closed, the Library and its staff continue to fulfill its mission to offer a variety of resources and programs that engage, inform, enrich, and educate the members of our community. In the coming months, as restrictions are lifted, the Library will reopen with appropriate safety measures and once again become one of the vital centers of our community as it has been for the last sixty years.
