May is AAPI Heritage Month

It’s May at the Niles-Maine District Library, and that means we’re celebrating Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month!

AAPI Heritage Month is dedicated to honoring the achievements and contributions of Asian Americans, Native Hawaiians, and Pacific Islanders. These people are—and always have been—an integral part of our country’s history, and every May we strive to highlight their unique stories.

This month, you’ll notice programs and displays that focus on the AAPI community around the library. Patrons will have the opportunity to learn about the cultural history of Taiwan, enjoy a Barefoot Hawaiian dance performance, cook a delicious Filipino meal, and take a class in ikebana, the centuries-old Japanese art of flower arrangement. On our second-floor landing, you’ll find a display featuring materials that describe the history, culture, and lived experiences of those who identify as AAPI. You are invited to browse this selection both in person and online, as we have a complete list of featured materials that can be explored from your computer or mobile device.

In recognizing AAPI Heritage Month, we hope to turn the library into a space where our patrons can engage with new ideas and stories. This May, we encourage you to join us in celebrating and learning about the diverse people and cultures that have helped shape America.

See you at the library!
